Mark
Oi Gente,
The end of the year is fast approaching and I wanted to wish you all a Happy Hanukah, Merry Christmas and a Happy & Peaceful New Year.
I have finally updated several members on our site and added some new ones. For those of you who havent been to the site in a while we have several new members, lots of news and added tons of new photographs.
If you still dont have your information on our site please go to the JOIN page and fill out your information. You can also update your current information using the same form. Don't forget to send those photos too! :¬)
I will be spending the end of the year in Rio and Buzios, Ill think of all of you while having my cold caipirinhas at the beach. ;¬) If any of you will be in Rio let me know so we can get together. I'll be in Rio from December 22 through January first and in Buzios from the first through the fifth of January.
Talking about getting together The school is turning 65 next year and there is an EARJ Alumni reunion being organized. It will occur in Rio on August 4 - 10. I included some of the events planned below, it all looks very tempting!
More information can be found here http://www.ea-rio-reunion-2002.com/index.html.
Ill definitely be there and I think this would be a great opportunity for us to see each other after so many years. Let me know if you are planning on going, or even if you are just mildly interested. It would be great to see as many of you there as possible. Carlão & Ursula had a blast on the last reunion and it was a much smaller event. Ill keep you posted if I hear of anything new.
Please forward this email to anyone you might think is interested.
Um grande abraço,
Mark

EA REUNION AUGUST 4-10 2002
The fun-packed events throughout this week-long celebration will give everyone ample opportunity to see old friends and make new ones. To go to old familiar places and to discover new ones. And, it is designed to allow for optional side trips out of town, without conflicting with major events. So far, here's the plan:
Sunday, 4 August 2002
We'll have a cocktail party at Gavea Golf Club ($TBA, with cash bar). Several hours to mix and mingle, trade phone numbers and compare notes. To remember Saturdays around the pool, Sundays on the links, climbing Pedra da Gavea or "Oh, how it's all changed!"
Monday, 5 August 2002
We'll take a "Bus Tour to Wherever" ($TBA, lunch included). A participant-guided bus tour to trigger old memories and get your bearings back. Please, nothing traditional! How about where the school used to be, and is now? Or Menezes, La Mole and Caneco 70; Paissandu and Caicaras; the old U.S. ambassador's residence and U.S. embassy; Castelinho, Prainha and Recreio dos Bandeirantes? You tell us! What about ending with an authentic 'rodizio' at Churrascaria Porcao on the Aterro do Flamengo, overlooking the bay? Remember those unending arrays of meats and salads, with farofa and molho a campanha?
Tuesday, 6 August 2002
We'll take a 'saveiro' day trip to Aguas Lindas ($TBA, covering boat trip only). We'll sail out into Sepetiba Bay on a traditional wooden schooner, for a casual lunch, 'caipirinhas', leisurely swim and beach football on a rustic island. (Those who did this in 1987 still talk about the revelations and romances that resulted . . . ahem!)
Wednesday, 7 August 2002
We'll go on a bus trip to Petropolis ($TBA, museum tour included, lunch separate). We plan to ride up the Serra, through tropical foliage and hairpin turns, to the impressive Imperial Museum in Petropolis. After a tour of Brazil's royal lodgings, we'll drive to newly renovated Quitandinha, then somewhere for lunch, then shop at Luis Salvador's ceramics factory for a different type of souvenir. Sound like fun?
Thursday, 8 August 2002
We've planned an afternoon gathering at Paissandu Club with all of EA's retired teachers and staff ($TBA). The 'Velha Guarda' group is headed by Mademoiselle, still vigorous and elegant at 95! They all meet monthly at Paissandu, which is warmly remembered for tennis matches and Senior Proms.
Friday, 9 August 2002
We'll take a special morning tour of H. Stern, for those who want to take home a brilliant memento of this trip. That evening we'll go to a Samba School's 'ensaio geral', or rehearsal ($TBA, entrance fee included). Let's see how well you remember those famous moves and fancy footwork!
Saturday, 10 August 2002
We'll wrap things up with a dinner dance at the Copacabana Palace ($TBA, with cash bar). We will honor our teachers and mentors at one of Rio's most elegant and symbolic sites. Now owned by the Orient Express, and managed by an EA grad, the Cope Palace will be the closing scene of a magical week spent "matando saudades".
And How About this?
- A Saturday feijoada.
- A cold Brahma chopp 'estupidamente gelada' at Barril 1800 after a day at the beach.
- A Sunday walk through the Hippie Fair to buy last-minute souvenirs.
- A night at the revitalized Lapa, at the 'choro' or 'gafieira' places.

Oi Gente,
News, news, news... a LOT has happened since I made my last actual Class of '85 news update in June (!). I'll try to put everything here. If I leave anything out, please forgive me and just email me reminding of what I left out.
Lots of people to congratulate! Jeff got married in June to Veronica Acevedo. Diana had her third child, a baby boy, on Bolivia's national day no less. I also heard from Vikki that Mandy had her first child, Alex, a couple of months ago. Rui and his wife, Lisa, also had their first child, Daniel Satish Castro.
In Late October we were in London where we met with Rui, Lisa, Mark & Lorna & Cristina Robertson ('83). We had a great get together at Rui's house in Chelsea, after having brunch nearby. Lisa was still pregnant at the time and the preparations were high for the baby to come. It was great to see Mark & Lorna too, we hadn't seen them in a couple of years. Mark Saunders received his pilot's license this past summer and he's been flying as much as possible in his spare time.
During the summer Anelise and I went to Fortaleza & Jericoacara, if you have never been to Jeri, you simply HAVE to go! Quite spectacular, a truly magical place. We only wish we could have spent more time there. It is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, although there are dozens of beaches and lakes there, not just one. As it is an area of environmental protection, the village is preserved from development changes such as electrical light in the streets, paved roads and high buildings. They only got electricity there a few years ago (!). Jessica Castro spent her honeymoon there and gave me quite an accurate description.
On our way back to NY we stopped in São Paulo for a day, where I met up with Mike Combetto and his wife Raquel. It was a fun day at the museums...
Mark Harvey has found his way to the site too. He lives in Castro, Paraná with his wife Regina, where he is the manager of his family's farm.
I also managed to exchange a few emails with Birgit. She lives in Germany and we should hear more from her soon.
Renata sent a very nice email which I want to share with you all. You can read it here.
We also got some very cute photographs. Fernando's kids at Halloween, Lee Ann & her daughter Laurel, Vikki and her daughter, Rui's son, and Stelleo's daughter.
Ulf is back in Brasil from his seven month stint in East Timor where he worked with the International Organization for Migration and now he's focused on creating a non-governmental organization to fight for the preservation of the Mata Atlantica and also creating a film about it. Ulf went through the Caminho de Santiago de Campostela in Spain a short while ago (widely publicized in Paulo Coelho's "The Alchemist") and told me this experience showed him how much he'd been fortunate in life and that it was time to give back.
Bruce attended Evandro's wedding in Barcelona during the summer. Apparently Diego and Alex Morales were also there and so were Bolling de Souza (86) and Magnus. I only have photos of Bruce, the bride and groom and Marcela Cookson (87).
A few weeks ago we had a small reunion here in NY at Churrascaria Plataforma. It was great to see everyone and we had a wonderful time. Michael Florez & his wife Rebecca Gomez, Marcelo Carvalho & his wife Mary Andriani, Mark & Anelise Engel, David Cortes & Ricardo Jardim.
Helene had been to NY a couple of times prior to September 11, and we got a chance to go out together a few times. She lives in Sweden and is working for SAS as a stewardess.
I started going through some old documents and found some funny things. I'll post them here every once in a while. To start off, how about taking a look at the very last Student Council Minutes of 1985?
And for those of you who don't know it yet, EARJ is turning 65 next year and there is a big Alumni reunion being planned for August. For more information go here: http://www.ea-rio-reunion-2002.com/
Let me know if you will be going to this reunion. From what I heard of the last one, where Ursula & Carlão were the only members of our class attending, it was a blast.
Um grande abraço,
Mark
PS. Just added lots of new pictures scanned from the Carioca 80-84 yearbooks. Vale a pena check it out... 12/06/01

Hi,
Just wanted to let you all know that everyone that we know here in NY is safe and sound. I've been able to get in touch with Bettina, Michael Florez, Ricardo Jardim, Marcelo Carvalho, Raul Castro (87), and Adriano & Elaine Almeida (87) . They and their spouses are fine. Shocked and stressed out like the rest of the city, but otherwise fine. It's been quite a week and we are all slowly emerging from it still devastated and dumbfounded.
I also received an email from Helene, who was here on the eleventh on a last minute flight. She is doing well and is back in Sweden now.
I haven't updated the site in quite a while, and I do have lots of news, unfortunatelly my efforts were hamperd by a missing hard drive, a trip and some unexpected attacks to NYC.... I'll be updating the site within the next few weeks.
Our prayers go to the families of the victims and the missing. If you want to help, or need some assistance please click here.
all the best,
Mark

Oi Gente,
I guess that my goal of doing a monthly update foi por aguas abaixo... There were plenty of happenings recently. Lee Ann had her first child. Her daughter, Laurel Naya Blackman, was born on April 22. Congratulations Lee Ann!!! We're still waiting for a picture... Rui's wife, Lisa, is also pregnant with their first child due in October. Piera Stoekicht found us on the web. She lives in Milan with her husband and two kids where she works as an architect. Her email can be seen in the Guestbook .
A month ago I had dinner with Michael Florez, whom I hadn't seen in ages, and his wife Rebecca. He lives here in NY and is a trader in Latin American stocks. We had a great time and Michael told me that David Cortez would be moving back here from São Paulo. Haven't heard from David, but I believe he's already moved.
Well, that's it for now...
um abraço,
Mark

Opa! Fevereiro já ia passando e eu sem dar noticias....
Frank Siegers just joined our site, and he's already dug up some of our yearbook photos. I can't wait to see them! they've been under lock and key for 16 years!!!! Frank has been living in New Zealand with his wife and three kids and works for Air New Zealand as an Aeronautical Engineer.
Stephen Griffith also has been sending me some pretty unusual photos from 5th grade. Anyone else has a secret hidden stash? Rememeber not to be stingy and to share....
I recently had dinner with Marcelo Carvalho and his wife Mary. Marcelo has been living here in NY and working at the American Museum of Natural History developing his Post-Doctoral research in Marine Biology. It had been twenty years since he left EA (nossa!!!), and we had a great time reminiscing. I especially remembered a funny story involving him, Marcelo Costa, me, Fernando and some fake blood.... the details will have to come out at some later time. It had been twenty years without seeing each other, and we had been living for the past nine years in the same city! typical....
I also received an email from Jessica who was recently hired by Roche to head their Intranet division. Congratulations Jessica!
So, what's been going on with you guys? haven't heard from a lot of you in a long time. Let us know what's been going on in your lives, either email me directly or post your news on the Guestbook.
Abraços,
Mark

Wow! almost two months without any news posted... sorry about that. I hope you all had a wonderful New Year. I had a great time getting drenched in Copacabana while watching the fireworks! A garrafa de champagne ajudou a esquecer a chuva forte que caia na nossa cara...
As usual our trip to Rio was intense and quick, just one week. Anelise and I spent a lot of time with our families and seeing old friends. We had a chopp with Frau Castro and her daughter, Maria Teresa (87) at Guimas at the São Conrado Fashion Mall. Maria Teresa is the Activities Director at EA now and she brought along her 3 month old (and very cute) baby. Ruth Castro (86) was also there and we got a chance to meet her daughter too. It was a fun and "relaxante" afternoon. I couldn't believe it had been almost fifteen years since I had last seen them... They looked pretty much the same and it felt like we had just seen each other a year or so ago.
I had planned on seeing Ursula in Rio, but we weren't able to meet. We'll have to try again another time. There was some sort of trend going on here. Upon arriving in NY, I got a call from Bruce, who was in Rio (!), and wanted to meet up... He was going to come through NY on his way to LA, but those plans also fizzled. Helene actually was here in NY for two days. We were supposed to get together with Bettina, but after a long and frustrating game of phone tag, Helene went back to Sweden without seeing anyone. :¬(
I was able, though, to go out to dinner with Rui and his wife, Lisa while they were in NY. They are enjoying their stay in London and are planning a few short trips throughout Europe. They recently went to Paris and had a blast.
As many of you know, Ulf recently moved to East Timor. He is working with an organization called IOM (International Organization for Migration) and is assisting the safe return of refugees to that devastated country. On his way there he stopped in Tokyo and got together with Pablo Kato and Jun Aoyagi. I'm waiting for the pictures to post them on the site.
I was also contacted by Bruce Stirling about a new Alumni Newsletter EA is going to put out. I don't have any details, but it seems that it will be a regular thing. I'll let you know as soon as I hear more about it.
Well that's it for today.
Abraços,
Mark
